[fsdaily.com - Free Software News - Published news] Outreach to GFDL liensed wikis: migrate to CC BY-SA by August 1st ...: "...Benjamin Mako Hill (Wikipedian, Free Software Foundation board member, and one of the people crucial to making the migration possible) writes on the Wikimedia Foundation mailing list: As the group with the most to lose and as the group that introduced the change at issue, the foundation and its broader community should devote as much time as possible to this issue in the next two months before it is too late [...] As many people as possible should join in this effort and spread the word..."
[SJ's Longest Now] SJ's Longest Now » Wikipedia now incompatible with third-party ...: Given the first date, one would assume a site would want to move as quickly as possible to decide, to avoid a prolonged period when no outside material under most any free license could be incorporated. Nevertheless, it took us over 6 months to decide to make the transition. Now we are faced with two hurdles: ensuring that no GFDL material has been migrated into a Wikimedia project since November, and far more complex, communicating with the hundreds of smaller GFDL wikis who chose their license for compatibility with Wikipedia, to ensure they know about this change and what it means for them. They only have until the first of August to figure it out.
[No maps for these territories] No maps for these territories » the big switch: Recently, Wikimedia had a community-wide vote, and the Board of Directors subsequently passed a resolution, switching from the GNU Free Documentation License, or GFDL (what the contents of Wikipedia and its sister projects, except for Wikinews & bits of Commons, are currently licensed under) to dual-licensing with Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (or CC-BY-SA), which is also a free content license but is generally friendlier for reuse purposes.
[madisonian.net] A Rumble in the Wiki/Licensing World: Wikimedia Foundation Moves ...: The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has proposed that the copyright licensing terms on the wikis operated by the WMF ” including Wikipedia ” be changed to include the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) license in addition to the current GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). This will affect all text and rich media (images, sound, video, etc.) currently licensed under “GFDL 1.2 or later versions”.

[Creative Commons » Commons News] Wikipedia community votes 75% in favor of CC BY-SA - Creative Commons: currently licensed under “GFDL 1.2 or later versions”. [Creative Commons » Commons News] Wikipedia community vote on migration to CC BY-SA begins now ...: Judging by discussions on foundation-l (the Wikimedia Foundation’s general list) leading up to this vote, I really don’t think a no attribution option would’ve flown. In fact the most recent big debate was over whether all contributors to an article needed to have their names printed along with any reuse!
[Comments for Jimmy Wales] Update on Wikia - doing more of what's working « Jimmy Wales: I use Wikipedia every day (and yes, I did contribute to the fundraising when asked) and WikiSearch would be a natural extension I found this blog through a report about WikSearch’s closure on siliiconrepublic.com here in Ireland – so it’s great to get the opportunity to express my view on the matter.
[Retro Yakking] Why Wikipedia's GFDL license has had its day - Retro Yakking: Let’s be clear about this: for you, the author contributing to Wikipedia, a change to the Creative Commons license will most likely not make very much difference at all. Though CC-BY-SA 3.0 allows authors more freedom over their content (in the sense it allows them to have a say where it is and isn’t reproduced) you can bet your sweet bacon rinds they’ll make you waive this privilege.
[Open Access News] Peter Suber, Open Access News: The proposal to see Wikimedia's content adopt a new dual license system has been voted on and approved by the Wikimedia community. With the full approval of our Board of Trustees, this now means that the Wikimedia Foundation will proceed with the implementation of a CC-BY-SA/GFDL dual license system on all of our project's content.
[Open Knowledge Foundation Blog] Open Knowledge Foundation Blog » Blog Archive » GFDL v.1.3 + CC-BY-SA: The same terms are available to any public wiki that uses materials available under the new license. The Wikimedia Foundation will now initiate a process of community discussion and voting to determine whether or not to use CC-BY-SA 3.0 as the license for Wikipedia.
[Lessig Blog] the voting has begun -- and if you're in the wikipedia world ...: There's a proper way to do this: start licensing new content under both licenses and change the licensing of a page when no trace of the original GFDL-only version remains, except by possible derivative works arguments. That's slower than just saying "done" with an unethical license change but it's the right way to go about it.
