[ Neverness] At the recent iCommons party (which was partly an after-party for the Digital Freedom Expo), held at the Independent Armchair Theatre (normally a venue for bands and other creatives) Jimmy Wales and Lawrence Lessig proved their rock star status by actually standing up on stage and managing to hold the audience with a talk about commons, wikipedia, and so on. Half of the audience were in the know, while half had no idea who they were.

The Freedom Toaster was there so people could freely upload their own cc-licenced music, and other people could download it freely and pass it along. (via Cosmos)

Groogle: At the end of this exciting day, I at least go to sit with Lessig and Wales and pose for a squinting photograph (which I consider my birthday present) ”¦ view pics here. The CC Salon / Bring ”˜n Braai was also an awesome event. (via Cosmos)

matthewbuckland.com: This is thanks to Jayne Morgan and Tony Lankester, as well as our very able production assistant Sthembile Gasa. I believe that the M&G Online editor Riaan Wolmarans, who is off ill today, has put out a warrant for my arrest because of all the mistakes he had to correct in the interview transcript, but I have to admit I wasn’t feeling like a perfectionist at 4am in the morning while transcribing it. Commercial Open Source Software: Apache was launched in 1995, at the time Netscape was the dominant Web browser and there was a fear that if the same company could own the browser market and the server market they would have too much control and could charge companies a tax of sorts for web hosting. Apache’s launch was done with a dual purpose. (via Cosmos)

Neverness: Day 2 of the DFX wasn't quite as exciting as the previous day. Attendance was down after the big first day splash (Lawrence Lessig and Jimmy Wales weren't there), and my exhaustion after a few late nights probably had something to do with it too. (via Cosmos)
