[Online Bulletin] Back on Monday we reported that Wikipedia changed all of its external links to NOFOLLOW links, and discussed why we thought it was such an awful idea. It seems we were not alone in that opinion, as Andy Beal over at Marketing Pilgrim recently launched a campaign to reduce Wikipedia’s Pagerank to 0.

Peter T Davis: Seriously, my main bone of contention is the ethical - Wikipedia contains no original research and thus should be obliged to link through with a followable link to source documents, otherwise it messes up search algorithms that rely on followable links to avoid a “chicken and the egg” scenario with duplicate content. JazzcatSEO: Now I know that link spam has been an issue on Wikipedia, and yes, some of those links reduce the value of the information on the page. But there has to be a way to give back to the community that made Wikipedia what it is today without making such a sweeping change that devalues the links of valuable contributors who are genuinely trying to make Wikipedia a better resource. Tinfinger: The second method, made most successful by Google News, is a fully automated set of algorithms giving rankings to various arbitrary concepts like relevance, recency, frequency of certain search terms, article length and so on. This ranking method can only be employed with an extremely imposing amount of processing power since the algorithms are very complex in their execution: last time I heard, Google updated their front pages only every 15 minutes.
