[sam in london] The Possibilites Suggest themselves to me / I’m feeling free ...: I gave myself a ridiculous hour and ten minutes to walk the mile and a half from King’s Cross to BADA, but I wanted to be able to get a little lost and maybe sit down at an interesting cafe without being late to class. It ended up being a fantastic walk–one I’d never attempt alone at night, Mom and Dad and Grandma, don’t worry–through some new neighborhoods. I walked on pavement I’d only ever been under before, shuttling along on the Northern line in the Tube. I’m pretty sure the area I found myself in first was called Somers Town (thanks Wikipedia!). Compared to the other neighborhoods I’ve been in so far, it stuck out like a sore thumb. First, there were no people on the street. I’ve always walked through the crowded streets and ridden in the packed buses of Central London wondering why all those people weren’t at work in the middle of the week- I think these people, the ones I didn’t see on the street today, were the ones working. Actual Londoners lived here, not just students or tourists. The faces I saw were women’s faces, most of them surrounded by black cloth covering their heads and shoulders. They had grocery bags, or they were pushing babies in prams. There wasn’t even any noise from the road- not a single car passed as I walked by brick buildings with names like “Somerset House”
