Openpedia.org > Eragon and WikiPedia extended learning

http://www.speedofcreativity.org [Moving at the Speed of Creativity] Several days ago, my son really surprised me by embarking on his own WikiPedia research effort (all initiated by himself without any prodding) on the topic of Eragon. (WikiPedia is one of the authorized websites he can access from his computer login, which is configured using Mac OS X’s parental controls.) He found the main WikiPedia article for Eragon, and from there learned much more about Galbatorix, his dragon, Saphira, the other dragons and dragon eggs which remain in Alagaesia, and more.

Unfortunately, however, some of the advice offered in the article paints ALL instant messaging as evil, and this is a label the technology does NOT deserve. Douglas Levin, senior director of education policy for Cable in the Classroom, is quoted in the article as saying: (via Cosmos)

Nicest of the Damned: I've imported a bunch of old Apple commercials, various movie videos, and have started importing shows somebody in the family wants to keep after watching the EyeTV capture files. The iTunes interface is pretty good at navigating a lot of content quickly, and provides preview frames for videos to help distinguish similar movies. (via Cosmos)

Fantasy & Sci-Fi Lovin' Blog: After the movie version, which stinks, my family and I were debating the script and what we’d have done with it. In trying to pick it apart we realized there’s not much that can be deleted to prune it down to a two hour movie without ruining the story in the latter books. (via Cosmos)

stolen colours: t for the life of me remember much more about him despite having read the book a few years ago. Wait. It wasn’t just a few years. It was before I got into year one! Edit: just read wikipedia’s synopsis of Eragon (via Cosmos)

The derivative story has been cited as being “The Lord of the Rings” and “Star Wars” with dragons, but it’s a good yarn: A farm boy named Luke ”” I mean, Eragon ”” learns the ways of the Dragon Riders to overthrow a tyrannical ruler, who uses the dark side to reign over the Empire.

http://blog.wired.com [Blog.wired.com] Table of Malcontents: The idea behind it is that the whole water cycle exists in your house in a seven-part layout, starting with steam and ending as groundwater. Everything from the draining rack to the ceiling vent plays an integral role in the water cycle symbolism (the rack represents a slanted landscape that makes residual water flow into the garden, and the ceiling vent represents the water changing from liquid to gas.)
