Google's Knol, Expert Wiki, Goes Live

[Slashdot: Generated for chicolance (318143)] I can see Knol as being beneficial from the perspective of selling my own goods (free advertising) but it's not really a replacement for Wikipedia and I don't think Google wants/intends Knol to replace Wikipedia. Knol is about sharing expertise and I don't see a reason why Wikipedia and Knol can co-exist in harmony.

Upgrade Wikimedia

[Wikipedia | Mediawiki] When I run the update.php script via shell I got the answer that there is no connection to the database. The "wgAdminUser and wgAdminPassword" fields in the AdminSettings.php are filled in correctly with the mysql superuser.

If I ever see another project get so annoyed that they threaten to (or actually do) tell their users to stop uploading to Commons and just upload locally, then I will consider that the Commons community has massively failed.

Re: Brion: Wikimedia SVN commit access request

[Wikipedia | Wikitech] There are some issues, I forgot, that Wikimedia servers use MySQL 4.0, that doesn't support subqueries, so I'll have to redesign complex SQL queries. But I'm going to correct this and other minor issues soon, and finish accomodation.

[Make love, not traffic.] If the Wikimedia Foundation won't allow a picture of its headquarters to appear in the relevant article, so be it. I just wonder what justification there is that wouldn't likewise apply to headquarters images found in other articles, .

Wikis and public libraries

[LIBR 246-11 - A Web 2.0 learning community] Creating a wiki was a new experience, something I hadn't done previously in class or at the library where I work. For me it was harder choosing a topic and deciding what to say than putting it online, since I chose a fairly straightforward format. The WetPaint instructions suggested using links often, so I decided to add a menu at the bottom of each page. Of course that would have to be changed if new pages (as opposed to entries on each page) were added, but I thought it made the wiki navigation seem very clear.
