Nick Carr: Expertise Is Real

http://www.straypackets.com [StrayPackets · Reconstructing the Ordered Stream] In What Will Kill Citizendium, Nick Carr says something eminently correct: Expertise is a real attribute, not a socially endowed credential.Much of the positive spin given to Wikipedia seems to be seeking to discredit the notion of expertise itself. I’m not sure where or why that hostility arises, but it is dismaying.Tags: Wikipedia, […]

The Future of the Wiki; middle school math wiki

http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com [Cool Cat Teacher Blog] Any wiki tool that develops some of these features will surely rise to the top of the list. The Jot wiki is developing lots of add'l functionality, but not these items and they seem to be moving away from the free model to the pay model, at least if you want to get their value-added tools or have more than just a few authors.

Got on Nightline

http://twofish.wordpress.com [ Twofish’s Blog] out of a twenty minute rant.  It’s a basic limitation of the television medium that they have to do that, but the limitsin broadcasting means that you have to focus in the strange, simple, and emotional, rather than complex, ordinary, and rational.  This has had bad and sometimes destructive results on political discourse, because that happens is that conversations get narrowed to dueling sound bites.

Not Trusting the Wikipedia Way

http://www.straypackets.com [StrayPackets · Reconstructing the Ordered Stream] Under the headline “Will Wikipedia Mean the End Of Traditional Encyclopedias?”, The Wall Street Journal pits Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales against Britannica editor-in-chief Dale Holberg. Those two won’t answer the Journal’s question, but I hope the eventual answer is: no.Wikipedia has a number of problems, all centered around the issue of trust. I want to […]

WikiTravel: Creative Commons Wiki Travel Guides

http://joeanderson.co.uk/blog [Webby’s World] Unlike the Wikipedia, it is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 1.0 license, which renders many images (and basically all text) from the Wikipedia incompatible (legally) with Wikitravel (meaning they cannot be used). This somewhat makes it hard if you wish to add images to an article, because you must find compatibly-license images.
