Step Two

[Twenty Steps - How to make a million online or die trying] Given the nature of the Twenty Steps Challenge, the odds can only ever be evens as the other participant has to have the same chance of winning as you so I only had one coin. He called none - I actually had the coin in my hand so I won.

Mea Culpa

[ Stately Barrett Manor - Julie's Web Journal] All I did was make a good faith attempt to clear up a misconception regarding a Wikipedia article. The result was one user unleashing a string of horrid vitriol on practically everyone involved in the edit.

Entertainment, In Whatever Form

The Tao of Mac - HomePagehttp://the.taoofmac.com/space [The Tao of Mac - HomePage] Banks' Use Of Weapons I'm now engrossed in the utterly, utterly fascinating The Lady Tasting Tea, one of my off-beat reading recommendations that is really paying off - and which I'd like to thank Paul Hoffman for. The history of Statistics is a lot more fascinating than what people would ordinarily think, even those such as myself who were wantonly exposed to its most venomous manifestations during our studies.

Feelings”¦.

http://twofish.wordpress.com [Twofish’s Blog] A lot of this is being influenced by the Chinese philosopher Dai Zhen, who spent a lot of time trying to construct a moral philosophy based on empathy, and who argued that the Cheng-Chu school had erred in viewing feelings and emotions as things to be removed to get at one’s inner goodness. I’ve been starting to read more of Dai Zhen.

When Founder Die

http://www.urbanhonking.com/ideasfordozens [Ideas For Dozens] In a recent talk at the Long Now Foundation, called Vision: Wikipedia and the Future of Free Culture, Whales explained the intricate collaborative processes involved in maintaining Wikipedia as well as the important role his dictatorial power has sometimes played in maintaining them -- like by promising to ban a large group of skin heads who were plotting to take over the site to twist it to their own message. Whales is skittish about the personal exercise of this kind of power and has gradually worked to wrap it in institutions that involve representative, democratically chosen, groups of Wikipedians in making all important decisions.

"The Current Negotiated Truth"

[Just a Gwai Lo | fire alarms kill dreams] A month ago I read Digital Maoism, an article by Jaron Lanier which argued that because so many in the Silicon Valley (and elsewhere) have an unquestioning belief that technology is here to solve all our problems, that extreme views (including, as he argues, collectivism) have mainstream appeal among technologists. I had a hard time with his argument that anonymity and the neutral viewpoint on Wikipedia leads to either bad writing or persistent inaccuracies on the site, but listening to Open Source's episode with Lanier, James Surowiecki and David Weinberger I found myself agreeing with Weinberger the most (Surowiecki and Lanier mostly agreed with each other, disagreeing mostly on emphasis and to which cases the "wisdom of crowds" applies).

Wikipedia

http://twoandtwomakesfive.blogs.com/two_and_two_makes_five [two and two makes five] It seems that for 1/2 of what I google, the Wikipedia page is in the top 3 hits, which is usually nice because most pages provide a decent overview and starting point for the information I'm looking for. Perhaps what is missing is a preservation of the skills involved in critical examination of multiple texts...

Education is life - John Dewey and the Chinese-American academic family

http://twofish.wordpress.com [Twofish’s Blog] The educational ideas of John Dewey and a popular belief in the importance of science are something that are more influential in China than in the West. In the case of science, China didn’t experience the counter-culture anti-science/technology backlash of the 1960’s, and in the case of John Dewey, he didn’t become the target of an anti-liberal educational backlash in the 1980’s.

At the airport - Olin College

http://twofish.wordpress.com [Twofish’s Blog] I made the comment to a reporter that is was easier for me to start my own university than to go into traditional academia.  This is quite true.  I talked to someone from Olin College which is a startup college.  The amount of seed capital necessary to start up the university was $500,000 and 300 students which is tiny in the corporate world.  What Olin College did have is name-power.  You don’t need too much money to start the university, but you do need people with high academic status, once you have people with status, you can get the money.

Getting into freelance academia

http://twofish.wordpress.com [Twofish’s Blog] I’m looking at the road ahead of me, and it looks bumpy and difficult.  It appears that becoming a freelance academic is the easiest way of me to do scholarship, but its never easy being a pioneer.  There is part of me that relishes the excitement of doing something new and difficult, but there is another part of me that resents having to do this.  After a short time, the novelty wears off, and you find that there is remarkably little praise and glory.  So why do it?

Wikipedia fever

http://flexnib.blogspot.com [Ruminations] , front: I started a Wikipedia entry on the late Reg Bolton this week, which piqued my interest in contributing more, so I finished translating an article on a Balinese king, Anak Agung Pandji Tisna, that had been marked as needing work.
