Dirty Political Tricks on WikiPedia

[Skipease Free People Search and Public Record News Blog - Skip Trace, People Search, Web Search and Public Record News] Revisions made by Capitol Hill staffers became so frequent and disruptive earlier this year that Wikipedia temporarily blocked access to the site from some congressional Internet addresses. The pranks included bumping up the age of the Senate’s oldest member, West Virginia’s Robert Byrd, from 88 to 180, and giving crude names to other lawmakers.

Technorati in China and other blocked sites

[ The Thinking Stick] The Technorati blog posted on Wednesday that people were complaining, maybe those complaints were heard in Beijing, or maybe it was blocked by accident. There are times here when you can’t get to a bunch of sites, I’m not sure if they reboot the filter servers or what, but there have been times when gmail has been blocked for hours, or yahoo all of a sudden goes down.

Web 2.0 - The Cracks are Beginning to Appear

http://jamdo.com [ - Jamdo Blog Marketing] Web 2.0 - The Cracks are Beginning to Appear Posted on Monday 24 April 2006 Web 2.0 has been a great thing for the internet. In fact a lot of people have hailed it is the “democratisation of information” in the way that community oriented sites have allowed people to promote information based on popularity rather than any corporate or media agenda. That’s great but the cracks have started to appear. Some of you have surely been following the latest Digg episode that has sparked a slight furore on the internet. It turned out that Digg was manually altering the results in response to somebody spamming their front page. Then of course, there was the Tammy NYP saga over at Technorati - basically where a sex tape was dominating their search results to such an extent that they were forced to remove all references to it from their front page. We also shouldn’t forget the problems that Wikipedia had with people altering other’s biographies. I guess then we can stop referring to these sites as...

Pompey

http://binarybonsai.com [ Binary Bonsai] Without it, the city population would starve and riots would certainly ensue. Pompey dealt with the resistance with a harsh hand and when the citizens complained about his methods he replied with one of his most famous quotations: "Stop quoting laws, we carry weapons".

learning to read

[if:book] Somebody interviewed Bob for a documentary a few months ago. I don't remember who this was, because I was in the other room busy with something else, but I was half-listening to what was being discussed: how the book is changing, what precisely the Institute does, in short, what we discuss from day to day on this blog.

The Broken Window Fallacy

Cynical-C Bloghttp://www.cynical-c.com [Cynical-C Blog] Or, the Parable of the Broken Window The parable describes a shopkeeper whose window is broken by a little boy. Everyone sympathizes with the man whose window was broken, but pretty soon they start to suggest that the broken window makes work for the glazier, who will then buy bread, benefitting the baker, who will then buy shoes, benefitting the cobbler, etc.

Lies, damned lies and Wikipedia

http://www.qwghlm.co.uk/blog [qwghlm.co.uk] The story of Alan Mcilwraith is an intriguing one - a call-centre operative from Glasgow who claimed to friends and colleagues that he had served in the SAS, been decorated and, get this, been knighted - all by the age of 29! It’s intriguing for several reasons - quite apart from the reasons of why he lived this intricately constructed fantasy life (I am no psychologist), it was curious to see how easy it was for him to pass it off.

Social Search, Part 2

[Opinity Weblog] This is Part 2 of a response to a panel presentation at Xerox PARC I attended earlier this week called "Beyond Search." In Social Search, Part 1, I talked about Netflix, Live365, and Pandora, and the various ways they use the Long Tail in order to do business online, providing films and music to people that they might not otherwise discover.
