The Probabilist Age

tallskinnykiwi.com[tallskinnykiwi.com] Chris Anderson of The Long Tail Blog has a good post on The Probalist Age and the Wikipedia vs Britannica debate. Chris has also found a way to cheat Google - by using unpopular keywords on his ultra-lame Google Ad, he gets thousands of page impressions but because there are no click-throughs, he doesn't have to pay.

Factually Speaking (Village Voice)

http://depravedlibrarian.blogspot.com [Depraved Librarian] "It's our goal to be as good as Britannica [britannica.com] across the board," said Jimmy Wales, founder of the openly collaborative online encyclopedia, responding to a recent surge of criticism from educators and other cultural gatekeepers concerned with the increasing popularity of Wikipedia's intellectual free-for-all. Soon after, the science journal

The similarities of Web 2.0 and the emerging church

[tautoko int.] And I truly think that we have something to give to the web 2.0 people. I have tried to define web 2.0 and the underlying principles in the last weeks and my knowledge of the emerging church has really helped my to broaden the horizon and understand stuff like Wikipedia a bit better.

Wikipedia, academia and Seigenthaler

wikipedia and 'alien logic:' the debate gets spiritual

if:book[if:book] If you like Mitchell Stephen's book-blog about the history of atheism, you might want to compare Mitchell's approach to that of "The Long Tail," a book-blog written by Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine. Like Stephens, Anderson is trying to work out his ideas for a future book online: his book looks at the technology-driven atomizaton of our economy and culture, a phenomenon Anderson (and Wired) doesn't seem particularly troubled by.

Wikipedia: Sue or Learn?

http://ponderance.blogspot.com [Ponderance] The least useful, most pathetic and childish response is WikipediaClassAction.org who are trying to organise disgruntled people who are unhappy with their entries to sue the Wikipedia Foundation. That achieves nothing and is a sad indication of a culture more inclined to sue than to think.

Wikipedia's Paradox

TechBeat- BusinessWeek Onlinehttp://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/techbeat [TechBeat- BusinessWeek Online] I previously proposed this as a baseline project (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Baseline_revision) where we basically take a revision of the article and analyse it for accuracy, neutrality, readibility and comprehensiveness. We then refer journalists, etc, to this revision as the best example of our work.

Wikipedia is dead, long live wikipedia

http://david.davies.name/weblog [David Davies’ Weblog] The very fact that the podcasting entry was found to have been altered and that the alterations were at best a distortion and at worst, false, is a great example of peer review in action. The anonymous editor allegedly giving himself a more prominent role in the history of podcasting has been shown to be inaccurate by those who also possess knowledge in this area.

where we've been, where we're going

if:book[if:book] This past week at if:book we've been thinking a lot about the relationship between this weblog and the work we do. We decided that while if:book has done a fine job reflecting and provoking the conversations we have at the Institute, we wanted to make sure that it also seems as coherent to our readers as it does to us.

Extraordinary Rendition - America Officially a Terrorist Nation Under George W. Bush

http://tabacco.blog-city.com [tabacco.blog-city.com] His lawsuit comes at a time when the Bush administration’s secret practices are coming under intense scrutiny in Europe, investigations underway throughout the region over the CIA kidnappings, as well as the possibility that the U.S. has operated secret prisons inside Europe. ABC News reported earlier this week the U.S. was operating two such prisons as recently as last month.

In Defense of Wikipedia

[The Blind Scholar] In several research papers I’ve written at least one of my sources comes from Wikipedia. The reason for this is that often I’m using Wikipedia as a source of background information on let’s say a government agency or at least once as background on a person in recent history.

What's a Wiki Good For?

Freshblog: Blogger Hacks, Categories for Blogger and other Blog Tips, Tricks & Toolshttp://blogfresh.blogspot.com [Freshblog: Blogger Hacks, Categories for Blogger and other Blog Tips, Tricks & Tools] Times wiki that was overrun with adult content and a recent controversial biography of John Siegenthaler, I would like to suggest that a wiki is best used as a tool for communication in large communities which are bound and defined by other means... (within corporations, for example, where contributors are accountable to one another by way of the organisation) but that the open-access to editing format is vulnerable when editors have no other obligation to one another.

Right tool, wrong fight

RatcliffeBlog””Mitch's Open Notebook[RatcliffeBlog””Mitch's Open Notebook] If the purpose of Wikipedia is only to create a forum for changing entries, I suppose it would be sufficient to say "Big deal, I can change this entry." That, however, is not a viable reference system, it's just more work for people who need access to information quickly and conveniently. If this is the purpose of Wikipedia—to provide a venue for anonymous debates about facts and interpretations of facts—then the company should stop licensing the content to other sites as a "reference" source.

When Wiki Writers Attack

[The Republic of T.] Multiply it by the number of sites that post Wikipedia’s content, and the ever expanding number of blogs and online forums, and the personal anti-defamation tactics mentioned above can become a full-time job if you’re famous enough. Unfortunately, in an age when almost anyone is armed with the ability to spread information or disinformation far and wide, that kind of eternal vigilance will probably remain a necessity for the foreseeable future.
