Upgrade Wikimedia
[Wikipedia | Mediawiki] When I run the update.php script via shell I got the answer that there is no connection to the database. The "wgAdminUser and wgAdminPassword" fields in the AdminSettings.php are filled in correctly with the mysql superuser.

The coming challenges for Wikimedia Commons
[All The Modern Things] Here I mean the relationship between the Commons community and each community of each other Wikimedia wiki. If I ever see another project get so annoyed that they threaten to (or actually do) tell their users to stop uploading to Commons and just upload locally, then I will consider that the Commons community has massively failed.

Re: Brion: Wikimedia SVN commit access request
[Wikipedia | Wikitech] There are some issues, I forgot, that Wikimedia servers use MySQL 4.0, that doesn't support subqueries, so I'll have to redesign complex SQL queries. But I'm going to correct this and other minor issues soon, and finish accomodation.

Wikimedia Foundation removes image of its headquarters from ...
[Make love, not traffic.] If the Wikimedia Foundation won't allow a picture of its headquarters to appear in the relevant article, so be it. I just wonder what justification there is that wouldn't likewise apply to headquarters images found in other articles, .

The Quick & Dirty Guide to Personal Wikis
[Stepcase Lifehack] Using a system that adopts the MediaWiki markup language is a good move, since it’s the one you’re most likely to need if other people invite you to participate in their own wikis. Honestly, I wish wikis had just used HTML and perhaps added some extra tags for wiki specific features, but you get what you’re given.

Wikis and public libraries
[LIBR 246-11 - A Web 2.0 learning community] Creating a wiki was a new experience, something I hadn't done previously in class or at the library where I work. For me it was harder choosing a topic and deciding what to say than putting it online, since I chose a fairly straightforward format. The WetPaint instructions suggested using links often, so I decided to add a menu at the bottom of each page. Of course that would have to be changed if new pages (as opposed to entries on each page) were added, but I thought it made the wiki navigation seem very clear.
